What is an Internet application
Almost every customer facing business is using some type of Internet
application. It can be as simple as gathering customer profile data
and as complicated as going through 12 screens to post a product for
sale in eBay. More people are using Internet applications on a daily
basis to do transactions such as buy consumer products like books,
make travel arrangements, pay bills, buy stocks, configure computers
to buy, etc.
What are the benefits of Internet Applications
Internet applications (also known as web applications) have become
incredibly popular since the mid-90s because:
- The ability to create an Internet application that allows buyers
and sellers to transact in a worldwide digital marketplace 24x7.
- Hi-touch businesses like banking, stock trading and catalog
retailers enhanced their productivity dramatically by allowing
their customers to self-serve themselves.
- Software companies used the Application Service Provider (ASP)
model by creating Internet applications that their customers connect
to without the need to acquire hardware and install software.
This model allows the ASPs to upgrade their applications more
often in a central location.
